Star Wars: Who was the Chosen One? Anakin or Luke?

Every great fantasy-fiction story starts with a prophecy, be it Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, or even Harry Potter. Star Wars is no different. The Skywalker Saga has the prophecy of the chosen one, the Jedi prophecized to destroy the Sith (the evil Jedi) and bring peace to the galaxy. 

In the Prequel Trilogy, everyone including legendary Jedi Masters Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Kenobi believed Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one. 

Anakin had no father and was even born due to the fluctuation in The Force which caused his mother, Shmi Skywalker, to get pregnant. This "no father" thing emphasized his strong connection to The Force; this was the very reason Qui-Gon wanted to train Anakin to become a Jedi. 

Obi-Wan trained Anakin believing he was the chosen one. However, when Anakin grew up, he was seduced by the power of the Dark Side of the Force by the Chancellor of the Republic, Senator Palpatine (later revealed to be a Sith Lord, Darth Sidious). Anakin, who was supposed to destroy the Sith, ended up joining them and thereafter became famous as Darth Vader.

Years later, Anakin's son, Luke Skywalker takes on himself to destroy the Sith and bring his father back to the light side of the Force because he "felt the good in him." After some attempts, he eventually succeeds and actually does bring Anakin back to the light side. Anakin becomes a Jedi, again, and kills Palpatine (for the time being, at least). 

Anakin Skywalker's turn to the Dark Side led fans to believe that he was in fact not the chosen one. Fans started believing Luke was the chosen one as it were his actions that led to the demise of Darth Sidious but even though it was Luke's actions that led to this, Anakin did it himself making him the chosen one. Luke was crucial for the prophecy to be fulfilled but the real actions were taken by Anakin himself. He destroyed the Sith and brought peace to the galaxy, just as it was said in the prophecy.

Lucasfilm also confirmed that Anakin was the chosen one, not Luke. So to conclude, Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one.
