Why Web & TV Shows Are Now Getting More Attention Than Movies
Back in the days, movies were known to be the major entertainment source. They made the most money and got the most praises but the time is changing. Nowadays web series and TV shows seem to be getting more attention than movies and today we're going to discuss why.
Differences between Movies and Shows
Shows (web or TV) have multiple episodes which give them more time to convert their story and showcase their characters to the audience. Even the mini-series have more screentime than movies. Because of this, shows often have more characters, simply because they have enough time to showcase them while not distracting the focus from the storyline and the main characters. Movies, on the other hand, have very little time to do anything. As people continue to watch more web series and TV shows, they are getting accustomed to the long watch hours and are slowly losing their interest in movies, because they end so early without leaving an impact.
How do episode-wise distribution and long watch hours benefit the shows?
The long screentime gives filmmakers (or show makers) more time to convert their story and the episode-wise distribution gives the audience more time to discuss the story, events and their aftermath with their friends and family members. Both of these combined leave a much deeper impact on an individual than watching a one-go-watch movie.
Back in the days when people didn't take TV shows and web series seriously, filmmakers made some really long movies, often split up into a movie series, to convey the story. This is to compensate for the short screen time movies have. Some films like Lord of the Rings have even longer extended cuts for the audience to get the most out of the story. This is one of many reasons Lord of the Rings had such a great impact on the audience that it's still remembered as one of the greatest fantasy-fiction story ever.

But nowadays when shows are actually getting the same, if not more, attention as movies, filmmakers first analyze the story to figure out whether it should be adapted into a movie or a show based on the number of characters and the number of major arcs the story has. If the numbers are high, the story is much suited to be a show so it has enough time to convey the multiple arcs and give all the deserving time to each character. This is the reason the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' novel series was adapted into a TV show, named Game of Thrones after the first novel in the series, rather than a movie.
I believe that if Lord of the Rings was made in 2021, it would have been a web or TV show. And hey, Lord of the Rings is making an all-new web series (as a prequel to the original movie trilogy) set to be released this year. Even the ever famous space-fiction franchise Star Wars is making TV shows and web series because they can show more of their world through shows (and because shows are getting more attention). It has a lot of shows coming up from Mandalorian Season 3, Kenobi, Ahsoka, Boba Fett to Rangers of The New Republic. Marvel, too, is making many series nowadays. They're making shows on a movie character because they have realised the power of long screentime and episode-wise distribution of story.
other factors that make series more impactful than movies
1. the Intro song/music
As this music is repeated in every episode, the audience forms a connection with it and often listens to it even after the show has ended, which deepens the impact of the series.
2. Ending the episode with suspense
Most series end each episode with suspense so the audience gets hooked up about what's going to happen in the next episode. This often forces the viewers to watch the next episode at the same time which also ends with suspense. This gets the viewers to think about the series even after they're done watching the episodes.
3. Ability to change and adapt
Series, unlike movies, have the freedom to change their themes according to the current storyline they're following. Change of theme often disturbs the movie audience because they don't have enough time to adapt to this new theme; this isn't the case with series. Series have enough time to showcase a smooth transition from dark to a comedic theme or vice versa.
